Abstract

Background. The “archival revolution” in Russia and other countries of the post-Soviet space that occurred after the collapse of the USSR opened up the possibility for historians to use investigative testimonies obtained by OGPU-NKVD bodies in their investigations. In the following decades, the investigative testimonies obtained by the OGPU-NKVD bodies were actively introduced into scientific circulation, used in writing of scientific works. Despite this, the method of verifying the credibility of the investigative evidence is still very poorly developed. The purpose of this article is to provide a critical overview of the approaches to using the investigative testimony of the Stalin era in modern historiography, as well as to formulate a basic methodology for verifying the credinility of this type of sources.
Materials and methods. The article provides a critical overview of main approaches to using investigative materials from the Stalin period presented in modern historiography. To solve this problem, a continuous study was conducted in the 1990s – 2010s analyzing publications of investigative cases’ materials of the Stalin era, specialized scientific literature published in Russia and other countries of the post-Soviet space.
Results. The article demonstrates the evolution of the attitude of researchers to the investigative testimony of the OGPU-NKVD. In the 1990s investigative testimonies were treated solely as counterfeit, but already in the early 2000s historians were convinced that this type of sources has a unique informational potential. The article shows that, to date, the investigative testimony of the Stalin era has been widely used by both domestic and foreign historians; however, the methods of working with this type of sources remain unclear. The article discusses the main methodological approaches to working with investigative testimonies, gives basic recommendations on the method of verifying the credibility of this type of sources.
Conclusions. The verification of testimonies obtained by OGPU-NKVD authorities is a time-consuming, but solvable task. Exposing investigative testimonies of the Stalin period to source criticism, researchers can find a lot of valuable evidence missing from other types of sources.
